Terrible Product

After a month, I find this dictionary to be awful. It looks like the developer rushed to release the product without any quality control. The pronunciation is terrible; it sounds like computerized sounds rather than a human speaking. Most words are chopped or spoken robotically too fast, and a very large percentage of the words are spelled rather than spoken. For example, when playing the word “ich”, the app spells “i, c, h” instead of speaking/pronouncing the word. I started creating a list with these instances but stopped because they were too many. The French dictionary was much better, but I do not recomend the German version. I’ll try getting a refund.

Reseńa

Fascinado con la app ayuda a completar mi vocabulario

Great!

It is a great dictionary, with many usage examples. It has many words in it that my previous paid dicionary did not. So glad I found it.

Limited

I cannot use this app by itself, needs more colloquial expressions. A suggestion: please add the option to write a word instead of just typing. Nevertheless, it still my first go to for translation, especially for verbs and conjugation.

Annoying request to rate

Should have been 5 stars, but App will continue to insist on your review

Disrupts audio playback

This has been an essential app for me ever since moving to Germany and in general an excellent tool. However, since the last update, opening the app causes any audio currently being played to stop. This is very frustrating and causes me to use other apps instead. I contacted their support over half a year ago and there have been no updates or fixes since then.

Not scholarly

This dictionary has the advantage of providing verb conjugations, which is helpful for me, who only have a reading knowledge of German. That, however, is not really worth forking over $25. This dictionary fails to provide the kind of diversity of definitions available on a lot of free applications and on free websites. I use Linguee's application in tandem with this application, but Linguee does not provide conjugations or less common noun inflections. You can download multiple language dictionaries through the Linguee app, so I use it for French and Italian as well. For online access, LEO.org and Linguee's website are the most helpful if your goal is to decipher German academic prose.

Worth it!

I was hesitant with only 2 reviews and it costing $25. In hindsight I'm very happy with this purchase. The app runs smoothly (using latest OS on a 6s Plus) and is very slick. It includes everything one needs when learning a new word in German: meaning, conjugation, whether the verb is used with akkusativ or Dativ, as well as examples. I highly recommend this app.

First-rate!

Very pleased with this dictionary. I really like the multiple examples of the word's usages under many entries. It is also exhaustive enough for me (in case I cross paths with an old or rare word that isn't in here, I have a free dic with a huge number of entries but no usage examples). The verb conjugations are very comprehensive and useful, and the whole design is clean and satisfactory. Heartily recommended!

Very useful and complete

It can be said one of the best and complete german english dictionary in app store. In this version by adding the conjugation tools by swapping to left, its very useful to learn verbs conjugations easly.

Hm.

I like this quote a bit, but I wish there was an audio component. German is so strange-sounding, and I want to make sure I capture that strangeness correctly.

This German Dictionary Is Not So Hot

For $25 this should be VERY good. It is barely mediocre. I found this by trying to check a word I thought I knew, Unrat. This occurs in The Blue Angel, the nickname the students give their professor--this is a classic! But this word is NOT in this dictionary. So I got out my paper Collins German dictionary--not unabridged--it had Unrat. I began a side-by-side comparison, and after a couple of dozen extensive tests, I would say this online version has between 2/3 and 70% of the entries of my paper version. For me many of the missing words are important, like Unrat. Whoever did the deleting knows little of German culture. I'm going to try to get my $25 back.

Awesome

I have the French and German dictionary apps from Collins, and both are grear because they will parse words for you, and you can put an inflected word into the search bar, and it will give you the meaning of that form and the dictionary definition of the base form. Very, very helpful for learning a language. I used the French one to read a book; I didn't know French when I started, but can read it fine now, clargely thanks to the Collins dictionary. Highly recommended.

Great app, with one little issue

This is easily the best German dictionary app. A lot of care was put into making the interface clean and intuitive. The only issue is that it's clumsy to close definitions. You open a definition by tapping on the word, but to close you have to click on a little "arrows" button on the other side of the screen. The definitions also stay open forever, so after awhile a bunch of definitions are open. I'd expect them to be closed automatically at some point, like when you open the app.

Good interface & easy to use

Pretty pricey but great on the go dictionary. Far more functional than paper copy. The only better feature might be pronunciation, but not critical for intermediate (and beyond) speakers.

Completely broken

The new iOS7 update makes all three of my Collins dictionaries crash immediately on launch. That's an investment nearly $100 rendered completely useless. Fix this!

Great when it worked

I loved it when it worked, but now app just crashes. Will update if issue is resolved. Expensive app to have it not work.

Great App

Use it almost daily.

iPad flaws

Excellent content, including common phrases. I agree with other reviewers that the fonts and layout are user friendly. I am unable to find the advertised flash card feature and on the iPad the FAQs are cut off after 2-3 lines. Apparently no other help features on the iPad version.

Good updates a missing feature

Update: The app crushed. I cant simply use it I think I have to delete it and reinstall it. My wish that my favorites won't be deleted. Would kindly synchronize favorites between iOS Devices this way will be more effective. So far the best English German dictionary in iOS I like the new update with ability to save words to favorites and to change the font. Words between Brackets have no "look up" feature only to copy which take more time to find the meaning of the words Please fix it, I'll give you a better evaluation when this is done Please add the feature to freely arrange the Favorites.

Consistently crashed

...immediately when opened. App was up-to-date version. Deletion and reinstall of app solved the crash problem. iPhone 5, iOS 6 - latest version

Great app, but need to fix the crash and the favorites

Best German dictionary there is. Conjugations, plural, gender are all present and very usable. Most words come with example sentences. Feature wise, I can only nitpick that the favorite list can use a different sorting option. There is no pronunciation, but once you learn a bit of German, it's not a problem really. Having said that, it has happened to me twice that the app would crash on startup. I had to reinstall to get around the problem. If this is solved, this app would be an easy 5 star. Update: There is one other serious performance bug. If you have many favorites (more than 200), the speed & responsiveness of the app become an unbearable drag. Since any serious learner would have many favorites, this is unacceptable. I'm lowering the raring to 3 stars until this is resolved.

Great resource

I've used this app for several years now. It's been a great resource. Love the new set up and the conjugation tables are great.

Great

Great update, but after update I couldn't open the app, had to reinstall it. At least it is working now.

What a great update!!

This new version is great! I love how with each word you can see where the accent falls for good pronunciation. I also really like how the definition comes up immediately without having to click on the definition/conjugation you're looking for. Another great update is the fact that there are no longer the three sections for definition, conjugation and number. It makes things much faster. Also no freezing! This was such a problem for me especially because I need these definitions very quickly. My job requires me to speak several languages all day long, and without these apps me succeeding in my job would not be possible! I have the Spanish, Italian, French, and German apps and thank you so much for each one! They are such a big part of my life!

German Major Essential

Great complete overhaul of application. Definitely recommend for anybody studying German. Strangley, the English word "whereby" is not in the dictionary, but the German word "wobei" is in the dictionary.

Spectacular new version

Wow, the new version is a complete rewrite and it's spectacular. Love the new interface, fonts, menus and speed. Great app!

A great resource

iPad rotation bug fixed…thanks! The best dictionary I've ever used with lots and lots of common phrases in both languages. Also it gives you proper prepositions (with case) to go with these examples. Very handy to have all the conjugations too. The iPad UI is much better than that for the iPhone. Despite what one reviewer said, plurals are there (as well as the genitives) as long as you are on the German to English side of the dictionary, although it would be nice if they had also put them on the reverse side.

It's still a great app

I use this app probably every hour of my waking life....so it's my top app among scores of apps on all my apple devices. Have found the rotation issue disconcerting, but it's a recent problem and i'm sure the developers will fix it soon ... So let's give them a break!

Great

A dictionary and verb conjugator in one, this saves so much time compared to the paper dictionary I used in college!

cross references not working

some cross references are not working. For example when a German word is tapped for cross referencing, the app switches to the English dictionary and, naturally , does not find the word. (try gelungen to gelingen) The APP seemed to be working better prior to the update.

Meh...

I wish I'd bought Ultralingua's cheaper version of this app. I don't feel this one was worth the extra money.

Incredibly useful

Lots of real-world examples, especially of words with multiple meanings. Plus it has every conjugation of every verb in every tense, and all the German plurals and genitives. I wish the conjugations were as easy to access in the iPhone version as on the iPad, but in general the interface is very solid as well.

Updated previous review

Found plurals after using for a few weeks. Very happy with app now - but as the comment on my previous review stated, having plurals more accessible would be nice. (Reply from seller of app to my email would have been nice too). Changed review from 1 to 4 stars.... This app does not give plurals for German words. Some words (like "brother" were missing the German word altogether. "Carrot" listed the botanical word, not the common spoken word "die Karotte". Karotte was listed nowhere!!!! I took a chance, but now I'm sorry. iTunes Terms and Conditions say "all sales are final". Apple doesn't even allow a 1-day return policy. Thanks Apple!!!! I will never purchase another app on iTunes.

Vocabulary?

24.99 and it does not have words like "purview"???

Genders of nouns

Am I missing where the dictionary tells you the gender of the noun? When trying to determine the appropriate article to use, it would be helpful to find this information easily. Also, for $25 could you not include some general grammatical reference charts? The app is way over priced for what you get. Can't believe I'm saying this, but a regular German-English dictionary in book form would be cheaper and more helpful.

Meh

For 25 bucks I expected a lot more. My biggest complaint is that there is no way to make vocabulary lists. Most all electronic dictionaries have this function and I certainly would like to see it added. At a bare minimum there should be a way to bookmark words. This dictionary only gives you history which is nit enough. Additionally, audible pronunciation should be a feature given this price point. That all words are hyperlinked is nice, but it's not enough to justify the cost. Layout, design and usability are the merits of this app. Please add more features so I don't feel like such a sucker for shelling out $25! Thank you kindly.

Ok but Not worth the cash

This program is only OK. I find I Need to restart it several time durring my German classes because it no Longer Open the keyboard. Will not speak the word for you though, which for 25 bucks one would think it should.

Disappointed

Enough said… I'm taking a German class and most of the words I wanted to look up weren't there. I was really hoping this program would have helped me out for a high price, but no!!

Update 1.2.4 made things worse

In general it is a very useful tool for students learning German. Definitely one of the better dictionaries out there. However, there are some issues have yet to be fixed: when clicking on a German word found within the definition of another German word, it attempts to look for the word in English. A recently introduced bug with v1.2.4 is that when switching among verb conjugations, the tense default to präsens each time. This is very annoying when you are working with a different tense as for each verb you have to re-select the tense. Please fix these little bugs.

Difficulites with plurals

I don't think the dictionary consistently indicates plurals of compound nouns and presents some noncompound nouns incorrectly. For instance, the entry for "die Fahrkarte" doesn't indicate a plural. One might believe this means the plural is the same if they don't know that "die Karte" is the base noun and that by looking that up you can find the plural "die Karten" and figure that "die Fahrkarten" is the plural of the first word. This one is fairly clear while others -- at least to me -- are not so clear. Also, all nouns I've encountered in which the plural is obtained by adding only an ¨ are presented incorrectly. The ¨ is placed over the wrong vowel. The pronunciation key indicates the correct pronunciation, but it doesn't match the presentation. For instance the dictionary provides "die Tochtër" as the plural of "die Tochter" and "die Brudër" for "der Bruder". I don't believe ë exists in German (could be wrong!), and I think the proper plurals are "die Töchter" and "die Brüder". Some significant errors considering the price of the product and it's generally anticipated function -- to support those learning a language or who don't know it well.

Buggy

If you click on a German word (for example ziehen) to get a definition, instead of sending you to the German page, it sends you to the page for the English word "ziehen" (there is no such word) and the program says "No Entries Found."

Compact, Well designed, Complete

I would definitely recommend this for anyone who needs a German/English dictionary for school, travel, or work. As some one who is learning German for the second year, I still depended heavily on my old Langenacheidt's dictionary. However this app compresses those 1400 pages into something that I can fit in my pocket AND use without having to be connected to the Internet. So far I've plugged in everyhing thing from adjectives that have been made from verbs to adverbs, both with the specific endings from the context in which I found them. This dictionary figured out precisely which words I meant without any help from me. That, to me, is worth the price alone. Great app. Plain and simple.

Rules

I love this app, it is very useful. Anyone out there looking for a dict, get this one. It works well with tons of translations. It has many common phrases and idiomatic ones under each entry. Being able to clicl on any word listed in the definition is real handy too, especially when clicking on a verb and then hitting conjugate.

Love it!

Was unsure about the price but I'm glad I bought it. It's like a full-sized dictionary, only better because of how efficient using it can be! Highly recommended for german language learners - you won't need to lug around the big dictionary again!

nice!

Exactly what I was looking for. Entries have plenty of use cases, which helps a lot. Nice user interface and fast.
